Are Ya Stuck In Stench? Cast, Closed, Compassed & Corrupt? God Has Mercy – Jonah 2

Jonah 2 (KJV)
Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish’s belly, And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God. When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord. And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

The words listed above are the words that were focused on during my journey through Jonah 2. Folk’s we’re about to get out of this wet journey with Jonah and on to dry land at the end of this blog.

When we are put in time-out by God or stuck in our stench, have nowhere to go, or no one to turn to, we as humans either cry out to other gods or the one true living God because of our affliction. When we who are Christians cry out to the Lord with our heart, He does hear us. Even those who are like the passengers that were on the ship with Jonah will eventually call out to our Lord God when they become stuck in a stench. What’s that revelry call when a bar or club is about to close…”last call for alcohol”?

When the Lord God Almighty makes His revelry call, will you still be stuck in a stench?

Who else is able to hear the silent cries of your heart? Many people can see when you are hurting and many people think that they know your heart. The reality of it all is that they really don’t know the depth of your heart’s pain or desires.  It was St. Augustine  that said …”if the heavens and earth could speak they would cry out, “We did not make ourselves, we were made by him who abides for eternity.”  When it comes to others, we think we can read between the lines in a minute flat, but God reads the line before the line is made in your mind.  Your actions may be seen by many. However, it is only God who knows why the heart truly prompts one to do what it does. It is God, no one else that gives you the desires of your heart per King David in Psalm 37:4.  In the OT, Pharaoh took delight in seeing what God could do, but not delight in God.

Who has the power to cast, close, compass, and give you over to your own corruption? Yes corruption, who gave Pharaoh over to a hardened heart and men over to their sinful desires?   From the beginning of time in my mind, I have always wondered why God allows His people to endure hardships, i.e. stuck in stench.  Here comes the Holy Spirit moment of insight. He reminds me… think from the beginning to the end, the people of God, the heart of people corrupts and the heart of God compasses (embraces). The Creator has never forced Himself on anyone, even though it is He who gives life and rules over death. God informed us through the prophet Ezekiel in Ezekiel 18: 4 “Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.” (TYHS)
***Lesson LearnedJonah had a heart problem even though he feared and loved God. His heart was disobedient to God’s will. We, you and I as Christians have the same… a heart problem even though we confess Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.  ***

It’s the TRUTH.  The heart problem is manifested in every country, every city, every county, and in every state as racism, hatred, idolatry, division in the Body of Christ, and disobedience. There is a heart problem in every school system, every church, and every place of employment. Now I really SEE and have experienced what happens when the heart is not rendered over to God. When the weeds are wrapped around your head and you are sinking down so far in your hell, that your soul faints, will you too remember the Lord as Jonah did? Will you “rend your heart” to let your prayer come “in unto thee, into thine Holy temple?” or will you forsake the mercy of God?

Ezekiel 18:31 tells us- Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?  My beloved darlings, we will have to cast ourselves away from all of those things that have us stuck in a stench, you know… pride, greed, backbiting, jealousy, anger, slander, bigotry, sexual immorality, hypocrisy, lust, impurities, leading sheep astray, etc., not just one transgression, but “cast away from all your transgressions.”  We have to stop letting closed hearts to God put us in a compassed position of corruption.

Daniel, Benaiah, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, were stuck in normal situations per say, during their time and triumphed because of God’s mercy. Even today in various areas on this Earth, someone somewhere is being thrown into a den full of lions, thrown in a furnace, and fighting off lions and other beasts they so happen to come across. Now, Jonah’s event was not the norm for that time or any other time, nor were the events about Jesus’ three days and three nights. Those two events are very important messages about God’s love and His mercy for His people. Yet to this day, there are still skeptics concerning both events. (TYHS) Why? Because there are still quite a few people that refuse to believe and are unaware that “Salvation is of the Lord.” (Jonah 2:9, Psalms 37:39)

I am here to tell you that if you are Stuck in Stench, God Has Mercy. If you have been Cast, Closed, Compassed, and Corrupt, rend your heart to God for He will have mercy. Follow in Jonah’s footsteps when he was cast upon dry land. We too must “sacrifice unto the Lord with the voice of thanksgiving.”

And I close with a few quotes from St. Augustine
“God knows all things before they happen; yet, persons act by choice in all those things where you feel and know that you cannot act otherwise than willingly.”
”Don’t you believe that there is in man a deep so profound as to be hidden even to him in whom it is?”
